James Benedict "Dick" Crum

On the morning of August 8, 2026, just forty-eight days after saying goodbye to his beloved wife, Betty, James “Dick” Crum peacefully answered his heavenly call and departed this earthly life. Though their time apart was brief, their love was everlasting. Dick is now joyfully reunited with his beloved Betty, together once again, “High on That Mountain.”

Dick was born on July 24, 1956, in Crawfordville, Florida, to his parents, Bertha and Alexander “Buddy” Crum.

On December 14, 1976, Dick married his sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Crum. Their bond remained steadfast for forty-eight years until Betty's passing.

Dick was a man who appreciated life's simple pleasures. Some of his happiest days were spent fishing, enjoying the company of family and friends, traveling, listening to his favorite music, and preparing delicious meals for anyone fortunate enough to stop by. His door—and his kitchen—were always welcoming.

Fishing was much more than a hobby for Dick; it was a way of life. He could often be found in the yard cleaning and preparing the day's catch while his favorite music played nearby. Among his many dishes, he was especially known for his deviled crab, a family favorite that will surely be remembered and missed.

Dick also had a great love for traveling, especially when those adventures were shared with Betty, family, and friends. He was particularly drawn to destinations rich in Western and Native American culture, beautiful landscapes, and wildlife. Dick and Betty seldom encountered a bison, prairie dog, steer, or other memorable sight without stopping to capture it in a photograph. Those pictures now serve as treasured reminders of the wonderful adventures they shared.

Those who knew Dick will also remember his wonderful sense of humor. He loved cracking jokes and good-naturedly ribbing the people closest to him. His laughter and playful personality had a way of bringing joy wherever he went. He had an extraordinarily selfless and generous heart. Dick was always willing to lend a helping hand, regardless of the time, circumstance, or task. If someone needed him, Dick could be counted on.

As his loved ones say goodbye, they take solace in knowing that Dick is casting his line into Heaven's finest fishing waters while surrounded by those who went on before him: his parents, Bertha and Alexander “Buddy” Crum; his brother, Sammy Crum; and his brother-in-law, Raymond Metcalf. 

Dick leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, including his siblings, Robert “Bob” (Juanetta) Walker, Mitchell (Tuyet) Crum, Gloria Metcalf, and Richard “Noel” (Luna) Crum; his sister-in-law, Patricia Crum; along with many other relatives and dear friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped ensure that Dick felt loved, cared for, and appreciated during his final days. Your visits, kindness, support, and companionship meant more than words can express. Dick found tremendous comfort in knowing that he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared for him.
