Marthenia Tisdale Coley was born on July 7, 1937, to Peter James Tisdale and Janet Wilson. She was the first of five children. Following the Christian teachings of her parents, she grew up and became a member of the Mt. Lebanon AME Church in Andrews, South Carolina.

Educated in the Georgetown County School System, Marty as she was known to her family and friends, graduated from Rosemary High in Andrews, South Carolina. She attended and graduated from Allen University, an AME institution located in Columbia, South Carolina. Following graduation, she taught in Greenville, South Carolina. During that time, she met and married Robert Eugene Andrews; they had a daughter, Regina Andrews (Gina). They relocated to Miami, FL. When Gina was six months old, Marthenia worked as an educator in the Miami Dade County Public School System until her retirement in 2001.

Marty always had something to give to family, friends, and even strangers. She especially provided for her daughter Regina, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Marthenia Tisdale Coley leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Regina and her fiance Kelvin; her siblings Mary McCray, Helen Mahone, and Marion (Gelanda) Tisdale; three grandchildren, Martina Treniece Beasley, Brian John Beasley, Jr., and Robert Allen Beasley; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Taylor Kinney and Olivia O'Neal Beasley; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, a cousin Bobbie Jean Crawford, and loving friends.

Marthenia was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Tisdale.
