Obituary

Sam Leland Gurr

Sam Leland Gurr, 89, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away on July 11, 2024.

Lee, as he was lovingly called by family and friends, was born in Havana, Florida, to Sam H. and Eldie Butler Gurr. During Lee's military service in the Navy, he served on the USS Oriskany. Many years later, he was fortunate to witness the sinking of the USS Oriskany off the coast of Pensacola on a boat a mile away.

Lee worked as a mechanic at Alford Chevrolet, Toyota of Tallahassee, Pioneer Toyota, and B&Y Toyota. He also spent many years working at Lively Technical School, where he loved teaching students and making new friends.

He really loved camping with his wife and family. He especially enjoyed camping in Helen, Georgia, for 32 years. Lee was an avid NASCAR fan and loved going to racetracks all over with his buddies. He also enjoyed hunting with his family and friends. Lee never met a stranger and could talk for hours about all the things he loved.

Lee was a devout Christian who loved the Lord, family, and Country. He served as a deacon at Haywood Cates Baptist, Faith Baptist, and Immanuel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of 52 years, Sharon Gurr; three loving daughters, Sheri (Curtis) Whigham, Barbara (Donnie) Friday, and Shannon Mayfield; six grandchildren, Selena (James) Harrell, Clay (Taylor) Carter, Elizabeth Whigham, Ricky (LaDonna) Shrader, Corey (Amber) Boutwell, Kelsey (Scott) Davis, and Shawn (Kayda) Mayfield; sixteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including Ronnie Canada; and three special friends, Marvette Tully, Irvin Jones, and Kenneth Ganey.
